When to Seek Evaluation for Back Pain
Most episodes of acute back pain improve on their own within a few weeks. Certain symptoms, however, warrant prompt evaluation by a spine specialist. Seek evaluation if your back pain is accompanied by leg pain, numbness, or weakness, is severe or worsening rather than gradually improving, has not responded to basic rest and conservative care after several weeks, or is associated with any change in bladder or bowel function.
The last of these may indicate a medical emergency requiring immediate attention. If back pain has persisted for more than six weeks or is significantly limiting daily function, a formal spine evaluation is appropriate regardless of symptom severity.
