Research Activity
Research Activities
My current research interests are focused in the reporting of clinical outcomes in spinal disorders and basic science studies in Biologics. Dr. Zori Buser, PhD is a world renowned professor of MSK Biologics research who joined me in practice for 3 years between 2022 and 2025. We had incredibly rewarding work with several research interns in-house to study spine surgical outcomes and biologics.
Prior to Dr. Buser’s time in my practice, from 2011 through 2024, Dr. Passias and I led a team of 4 full-time researchers housed within the NYU Orthopedics Department who support our interests in a wide variety of spinal disorders in adults and children. We utilize databases to investigate the impacts of treatment and co-morbidities on clinical outcomes, as well as to investigate the utility and applications of new patient-reported outcome measures.
Numerous annual research presentations are well received at national and international academic societies, where I frequently moderate sessions and guide curriculum. I currently prospectively collect data to follow patient-reported outcome measures (PRO) on my clinical practice patients for research purposes. My longer-term goal is to distinguish myself in outcomes reporting for endoscopic and other minimally invasive spine techniques.
Grant History
- PRESENT:
MiMedx | co-PI | 100% | Role of Amniotic Allograft Membrane in Preventing Epidural Fibrosis and Nerve Inflammation in a Rabbit Model of Lumbar Laminectomy | 7/2022 - 7/2023 - PAST:
National Institute of Health (NIH) | PI | 100% | Effect of laryngoscope blade type and c-spine immobilization technique on intubations | Short Term Research Grant | 6/1997 - 9/1997
Clinical Activity
My clinical practice has always focused on degenerative and traumatic disorders of the spine, primarily through the incorporation of minimally invasive surgical (MIS) technology and techniques. I was one of the first surgeons in NYC performing MIS Lumbar interbody fusions and true endoscopic spinal decompression and discectomy. For this reason, I frequently proctor national and international cadaver instructional courses for spine surgeon education.
Education Activity
I take great pride in educational activities during clinical practice, in consulting activities, and as a volunteer in numerous academic societies. I have always sought to include a wide variety of students in my clinical practice, currently proctoring NYU med students, residents, and fellows during their spine rotations. I served as an attending of the spine rotation for NYU orthopedic residents for 14 years continuously. I also formally proctored Nurse Practitioner Students from NYU, in addition to Physical Therapists and Medical students both in the OR and in my private offices.
Throughout my career, I have innovated and taught courses at major academic surgeon-focused societies and take pride in participation in hands-on cadaver courses for other practicing surgeons in numerous venues. For the past 6 years, post-doctoral students have interned full-time in my clinical offices for two-year blocks with exposure to the administrative and clinical care of orthopedic patients. I’m a moderator and set curriculum for the ICL, instructional course lecture for the CSRS annual meeting and was appointed Chairman for Education and member of the Board of Directors for the CSRS.
